WAC Conference Tournament Preview

The WAC has been pretty balanced all season long. With Nevada already in the big dance, the other teams will be gunning for that NCAA Tournament bid. It should be a dog fight March 6-10 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Early Favorite: Nevada
Nevada has a 27-3 record and is fighting for a 4 or 5 seed in the tourney. Nick Fazekas, one of the top players in the country, is leading the way with 20.9 ppg and 11.3 rpg for the Wolf Pack. Nevada is currently ranked 10th in the country and can strengthen their seed with a big showing in the conference tournament.

Team to keep an eye on: New Mexico St.
NM. St. has been hot all season long. They just about knocked off conference favorite Nevada on Saturday and are very experienced. The Aggies are a team to watch out for and could pull off a stunner in the championship, but this team needs to stay focused on winning the conference. They're on the bubble and will most likely need to win the conference tournament in order to get in the NCAA Tournament.

Sleeper Team: Utah St.
With the experience this team has, don't be surprised if they come out on top and win the WAC championship. They haven't played particularly well on the road, but this team is well coached and have loads of talent. They do not have a prominent big man, but can shoot well from anywhere on the floor with their 47% shooting from the field and 37% from beyond the arc.

Potential Stunner: Boise St.
Don't be surprised if you see this 6 seeded Boise St. team pull of an upset and possibly make the conference championship. They upset BYU at the beginning of the year, played Nevada and New Mexico St. tough twice, and took down Utah St. once. The Broncos can get it done on a neutral court.

The Pick: Nevada
In the end I like Nevada. This is a very well-balanced conference and anyone can take down the leagues premier team. But Nick Fazekas and Marcelus Kemp (inset) are too much for the other teams to handle. The Wolf Pack won't be looking past anyone in this tournament and need to make a strong case for a legit seed. They should take the title and help bubble teams around the country in making the tourney by finishing off the WAC bubble teams such as New Mexico St. & Utah St.

I got to go with Nevada as well... the Fazekas-Kemp duo is just too powerful.

My pick is Nevada too. If they have their head on straight and don't overlook anyone they could really run away with this one I think. I foresee a possible 4 or maybe 3 seed in their future come selection sunday.

dont you suppose the team to keep an eye on, sleeper and potential stunner are all basically the same thing?

no not necessarily. stunner is like the team you dont expect at all. team to keep an eye on is the next best team that has the chance to win and sleeper is the team that isn't the favorite but has a legit chance to take it.
