So I guess NBA refs are racist...

This may be a few weeks old but I want to give my insight on this.

An article according to The New York Times (what a surprise) states "A coming paper by a University of Pennsylvania professor and a Cornell University graduate student says that, during the 13 seasons from 1991 through 2004, white referees called fouls at a greater rate against black players than against white players."

Ok? Are you trying to look like complete retards? Did you happen to know that well over 80% of NBA players are African-American? This isn't racism, it's math. I guess hockey refs are racist against their own race too because they call more penalties on white players.

In this politically correct world we have gone too far. If you read the New York Times article you can see they even give in to this study. It is quite ridiculous. I love to bash the NY Times, it is probably the 2nd most left-wing newspaper in the country (behind the St. Petersburg Times). I don't mean to be getting into political issues here, but boy do I hate the NY Times. I mean, speaking of being biased, why doesn't the NY Times look at some of their own articles and news it provides... this is a newspaper that hates it's own country.

From the article it says "Both men cautioned that the racial discrimination they claim to have found should be interpreted in the context of bias found in other parts of American society."

If you're going to say that, then why don't we just institute Affirmative Action into the NBA like we have in all other parts of American society? I mean, it's only fair.

Why don't you professors stick to what you do best, which is teaching, and let the NBA refs stick to officiating. And me? Well, I'll stick to blogging.

did the people who created this study watch no tape of every ref sucking off d wade? what is their explanation for that, huh? the league's treatment of d wade alone blows up any credibility this study ever had.

I think the study was flawed in many ways, but "Ok? Are you trying to look like complete retards? Did you happen to know that well over 80% of NBA players are African-American?"

Don't you kinda think they took that into account? They averaged things out... which is why the study also mentioned that black refs called fouls at a higher rate on white players (though the difference was less pronounced). It's not like the people running the study were complete idiots... I'm quite positive they were able to take into account the racial makeup of the NBA.

And I'm not sure about the need to bash the NY Times... it's not like they created the study. They published the study done by the University of Penn... their goal is to sell newspapers and I'm sure publishing this helped, as it was picked up by almost every major news source after appearing in the NY Times. It's a job well done by the newspaper.

I bash the NY Times because... well they're the NY Times.

Plus you can tell by the article that they agree with it

And they're not entitled to that opinion? It's not like it was a completely worthless study. It had its interesting points.

interesting in the sense that it stirred up a lot of worthless headlines and stole a little airtime.

I think that if this study is truly accurate we should just bring back the 3/5 compromise. Either every 3 pointer by a white player is worth 5 or every five points scored by a black player would be worth 3. If the league is truly as racist as people think then this should be a problem and it could be fit right in along with affirmative action.

Well that's more than a bit ridiculous, even with the fact that you're not really being serious. It's not like the study said that white refs kill black people... just that they call a slightly higher percentage of fouls against them (and vice versa for black refs/white players)... honestly I'm not sure what the reason for the extremely quick dismissal by you guys... I'm not even sure Ming read the article (either that or didn't really understand it) and now we're talking about the 3/5 compromise... that's a bit ridiculous.

And for the record, the primary skill of many professors is research and writing based on that research, not teaching.

And I'm not entitled to my opinion??? Yes I did read the article obviously I found it and thats one of the main reasons I did this post in the first place. The NY Times is bias and that's a fact.

Yea, it was a joke. I was just trying to throw in a little humor on the subject. Those comments in no way reflect the ideas or thought of TSF in any way.

Seriously, admit it...it was a little funny wasn't it?

well maybe these professors should do research on something they actually understand...

Ming, obviously you're entitled to your opinion but when you say something like, "Ok? Are you trying to look like complete retards? Did you happen to know that well over 80% of NBA players are African-American? This isn't racism, it's math. I guess hockey refs are racist against their own race too because they call more penalties on white players." it makes me wonder how much you understood what they actually studied. It's not like they just looked at the pure number of fouls called... they're not that dumb.

No offense, but it looks like a post designed to rail on the NY Times disguised in a short blurb about the story itself. Which you can do, it's your blog, but again, I'm not sure why you use an interesting (if slightly misleading) article as an example of why the NY Times "hates its own country."

i wasn't using it as an example of why the NY Times hates it own country. i was refering it to their own bias. All I'm saying is that it isn't fair to be calling these refs biased when in fact the NY Times should look at it's own political articles and editorals to see how biased they really are and how much they hate their own country,
